Con Ed advises if a power outage occurs, disconnect large appliances, charge devices beforehand, and have flashlights and batteries ready. Never use portable generators indoors or plug them into a wall outlet.
Immediate safety
Immediate safety
- Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Do not touch them or anything in contact with them.
- If a power line falls on your car, stay inside until emergency personnel arrive to help you.
- Immediately report any downed wires to both the police and Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED.
- Stay away from any fallen transformers, which are gray metal drums attached to poles and wires.
Power outage preparedness
- Charge your cellphones and other mobile devices while you still have power.
- Have flashlights, battery-operated radios, and extra batteries on hand.
- Before power is restored, turn off or disconnect major appliances to prevent overloading circuits when the power comes back on.
- Never operate a portable generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and air vents. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
