The NYS Rechargeable Battery Law (Law), Article 27, Title 18 of the Environmental Conservation Law makes it illegal to throw rechargeable batteries in the trash. See the charts below to see what types of batteries are accepted at the County’s Household Material Recovery Facility in Valhalla. Lithium ion batteries are an increasing cause of fires in Westchester and across the country. Check out the County's Department of Emergency Services' video on Lithium ion battery safe practices, as well as their website for more safety tips.

Bureau of Sanitation (914) 422-1217
The Bureau of Sanitation provides solid waste collection for White Plains residents on an established schedule. It also provides weekly paper and co-mingled (mixed bottles, cans and jars, including plastics labeled 1-7) recycling collection for residents and some (small) commercial buildings.
DPW adheres to New York State and Westchester County imposed recycling and waste reduction goals. There are some items that the City is not allowed to collect, under guidelines from Westchester County, however the County does provide additional opportunities for recycling and disposal which may be viewed on the Westchester County website.
Schedule an appointment with the County's drop off site in Valhalla for items the City of White Plains does not collect, including paper shredding at H-MRF (westchestergov.com).

Large Appliances and Metal Items
DPW recycles large household scrap metal items which are also known as "white goods." Call Sanitation if you have a boiler, refrigerator, stove, metal bed frame, metal shelving or other large metal item to schedule an appointment before placing items at the curb.
NOTE: The City temporarily stores all E-waste items and "white goods" at the Gedney Way Recycling Yard.
TV's/Computers
Call sanitation to schedule an appointment for pick up. Do not leave items at the curb other than on your scheduled day of pick up. Alternatively, residents may bring their TV's, computer equipment, or other small electronic items to the Gedney Recycling Yard.
Mattress Disposal
Due to possible infestations of bed bugs, the City requires all mattress to be wrapped in plastic and sealed (with tape) in order for Sanitation to remove them.
NOTICE: If you have items scheduled for pick up and they were NOT picked up by 2 p.m. on that day, please call Sanitation at 914-422-1217 at your earliest convenience.
Please do not leave uncollected items at the curb as this becomes an eyesore and this violates the City's Municipal Code.
NOTE: The city does not collect household renovation debris i.e. doors, fencing, siding, toilets, bathtubs. If you are having work done in or around your house, please arrange for proper disposal with your contractor or, for your convenience, Westchester County has provided a list of Licensed Private Transfer Stations and Processing Facilities you may contact directly.
